To be sold in the European Union, cocoa must be traceable to the plot and must not come from deforested land. Without explanation, farmers see geolocation or registration as a burden, sometimes as a threat.

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requires cocoa sold in the European Union to be traceable to the plot and not to come from land deforested after 31 December 2020. Plantations must therefore be geolocated.
